The most frustrating thing in my life (Aside from Qwest) is that I want to make all my friends’ computers just run happily and I’m stuck here in Ridgway.

I don't know - that helping make friends' computers run happily thing gets old fast after so many times reinstalling Windows...

That's where the being there and making sure it won't break again comes in.

That's what I'm not sure how to convey to people. I mean, I tell em not to download and run random programs, and not to click YES to popup ActiveX controls and other auto-downloads...but they still seem to get major spyware and adware, and for some reason, I don't.

No IE. Ever. No Outlook. Weekly or so scan with SpyBot. AVG Antivirus. Turn on Automatic Updates. Tell people that clicking "Remind me later" won't keep them safe.

Then uninstall all the crap they don't use, so they have a chance in hell of noticing when something new shows up. Ask them to call me if something suspicious happens.

And above all, warn about the price of free without checking first.

Is AVG Antivirus better than, say, Norton Antivirus 2003, or any NAV version?

a) Free.

b) Picked up a few things Norton 2003 missed last time I used it. Not a big difference, but ...

Yes.

Speaking of remote tech support, any tips for working on the phone with people who know just enough to be dangerous? The ones who don't know how to do the task I want them to do, but think they can figure it out by clicking different places? The ones who click "Don't replace file" buttons without asking me while copying files and don't think it matters enough to tell me.

Not only am I trying to picture their computer in my mind, but they're moving so fast and not telling half the picture.

Being on the other end of that and the one feeling dependant for tech support, I heartfully agree.
